Fireworks From a Different Era

Sadly, for old man Cosby, the fireworks have only just begun…

If you tuned into CNN looking for fireworks from around the world, you probably witnessed a scene that felt more like watching an old man being escorted to the Whipping Post.

So far this New Year, what we’ve learned is that Gloria Allred’s greed never sleeps.  Something feels really wrong about trying an old man for alleged deeds that allegedly happened nearly half a century ago.

As a woman, I will always have empathy for women who have been abused.  However, as a woman, I also know how it feels to have expectations in relationships that are not met and the empty feeling that can result that can cause her to want someone to pay a high price even if there’s no one to blame but herself.

Women with low self-esteem will often behave in self-defeating ways and somehow expect a right outcome.  Then, when their expectations are not met, no one seeks vengeance like a woman scorned, like a woman who is empty and leaking self-worth.

T’was news to me that it took 50 women to string a black man to a tree.  I thought it only took one fairly attractive white one.

The long walk of shame…but whose shame? His? Society’s? A short busload of drug addicted bimbos?

When the pretty young thing agrees to “party” with the wealthy male, she does so with an expectation that he will make her more than what she is.  Where she is dull, he will shiny her up with diamonds and pearls and maybe even a car.  He will open doors for her to the best restaurants with her on his arm while being the envy of high society.  He will introduce her to all things exotic: people, trips, trippy drugs.  If the wealthy male is Bill Cosby, well, he could make her a star!!  Wouldn’t that be great?!!  Why, if she plays her tarot cards right, he might even marry her and she won’t have to work…at…all!!

It feels strange and just wrong that what was done in the era of free love, Quaaludes, black beauties, and a whole assortment of psychedelic skittles, that one space in American culture will now be pitted against another.

Somehow no matter how messy the culture gets, people still want to act as though their era’s dirt is less grimy than another era’s dirt.  Fifty or so women, who have ditched their rose-colored sunglasses, roach clips, crocheted halter tops, blue-jean booty shorts, and bare feet for St. John suits, Hermes scarves, and Etienne Aigner shoes, all say that Bill Cosby potentially committed a crime against them.  However, some of them, without shame, have admitted to returning by their own strength to the scene of the hallucinogenic crime.  Multiple times.

Today, America, in its hypocrisy, pretends to be against the illegal drug use of the 60’s and 70’s.  Today, abusing uppers and downers is forbidden…unless 12 different doctors have written you a script for that pesky knee injury you suffered way back when you were 22.  Now you’re 50.

Today’s cultural mindset seems to say no to drugs but a resounding yes to every other kind of immorality including homosexuality; cross-dressing men; multiple children out of wedlock by multiple men; so-called mothers (and their daughters) posting obscene photos of themselves on the internet for attention, etc.  But have we as a culture really said yes to all this mess?

Somebody is lying.

No one will ever make me believe that one white woman in the 60’s or 70’s, even in the age of free love, did not have the power to convince at least one slightly bigoted white man that she had been harmed by a black man.  Starting with her father.  It has never taken anything but a whimper from a white woman…and some white man with a plank or a pipe or a rope or a gun or a bat or a badge would come running with a mob to her rescue.

So given our current cultural mindset, are we to believe that in the 60’s and 70’s, in the midst of the angry and divisive civil rights era, in the midst of the free love era, there was not one racist police officer, judge, minister, examining doctor, or red-neck lawyer that would not have been salivating to strip a black man of his wealth, reputation, and his freedom?

Bill Cosby was not and will never be that funny.  Ask O.J. Simpson what he is doing time for?  Some missing sports trinkets or the missing white girl?

Hmm, if Gloria Allred was unsure if her plaintiffs would find empathy in the blue eyes of her peers and their husbands, greed aside, she would never have pursued these cases.  She, like everyone else not living under a rock, is well aware that there are a-plenty white folks who will still come to a white woman’s rescue…even when she’s just a common amoral, gold-diggin’, homewreckin’ whore…even when she’s lying.  What?  Too harsh?

Winning a case is never about the truth.  It’s about which lawyer tells the best story.  Throwing in black beauty Beverly Johnson (a liar whose hand was itching to rise to cry rape for a bigger payday) was the chocolate drizzle to go with the icing on Allred’s case.

Was there drug use?  Sure.  Was there sex involved?  Definitely.  Was there consent between Bill Cosby and the women?  Of course there was…multiple times.  Some with mother’s approval.

Are you excited that these women will finally get their day in court? Or do you think this is just a modern witch hunt with a feminist twist?
